Benign prostatic hypertrophy / hyperplasia (or BPH) is the medical term used to describe an enlarged prostate due to unknown causes. This condition is seen with increasing frequency as men age and is believed to affect 50% of men over the age of 50 years. The symptoms of BPH include incomplete voiding, urgency, frequency, dribbling and frequent urination at night. Although the exact cause of BPH is unknown, mounting evidence supports the theory that hormone imbalance is at the root of this problem. In healthy individuals only a small amount of testosterone is converted into di-hydro-testosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, but this conversion increases as men age and the amount of DHT in the body rises. This increased level of DHT is very active in the prostate and causes the cells to enlarge and divide – leading to BPH. Albi’s Prost LB7 is a seven herb combination formulated to help regain hormonal balance and correct the underlying problem as well as soothe the urinary / kidney systems to relieve the associated symptoms.

Saw Palmetto is the most famous herb used in treating the prostate and in men’s sexual health. The fatty acids in this herb work by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase and hence lower the levels of DHT in the body resulting in decreased prostate size. Numerous studies have shown Saw Palmetto to be effective in treating BPH. Albi’s Prost LB7 provides 200mg of the most potent part of the Saw Palmetto plant – the berry – and is standardized to contain at least 25% of the active fatty acids.
The Juniper (from Juniper comminus) is included to stimulate the kidneys to flush out the urinary system which is an important part of treating BPH. When the prostate is enlarged there is often urine retained in the bladder which contributes to stagnation and encourages bacterial growth and infection. The volatile oils of Juniper not only work as a diuretic but also as an antiseptic to combat any bacteria that may be lingering.
Pumpkin seeds are gaining popularity in men’s health and with good reason – studies have shown that the oils contained in the seeds help achieve hormone balance in the body and also work to inhibit bacterial growth. The 4:1 extract in Prost LB-7 ensures that enough of these medicinal oils are consumed to make a difference to those suffering from BPH.
Zea mays, Buchu betulina and Uva Ursi – also known as Cornsilk, Buchu leaves and Bearberry – are three herbs used commonly to treat many problems of the urinary tract. Cornsilk works mainly as a soothing diuretic to encourage toxin elimination and ease of urination whereas Buchu is not only diuretic but antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Uva Ursi is also anti-inflammatory, diuretic and possesses antimicrobial properties.
The seventh and final herb in Prost LB7 is Pygeum africanum. This herb contains a fat-soluble resin that prevents the production of DHT by the cells of the prostate similarly to Saw Palmetto. These two herbs together to significantly reduce DHT levels in the body and the size of the prostate gland itself.
